That's a nice one. The tricky part with IPAs is making sure you get them fresh, since the hops tends to degrade pretty quickly. If the canning date isn't within about 2-3 weeks of when I'm buying, I won't get them. I learned the hard way early on and had several that had already devolved into a malty unbalanced mess...

I find I'm very fond of the Northeast IPA style. Fortunately, Bearded Iris here in Nashville makes some really nice juicy examples of that style!

Wow...never knew that....but never bought a craft beer in a can....always a bottle,
but did home brewing a lot and I never found them to go off that quickly....Hops are normally there
to also help the beer keep fresh.

Will keep an eye out for that beer cheers thumbsup.gif
America's craft beers are surprisingly great ...I would go as far as saying some of their IPA's are the best in the world ohmy.gif ....another I like is Sierra Nevada Pale ale

It's ridiculous how much the beer scene here has improved in 10 years.

The snobbery that was once the domain of wine drinkers has also taken over the hipster craft beers. biggrin.gif

Because I feel the urgent need to prove that even PTC can be right, occasionally ...

Beer has improved, yes, but just as likely is a lot of crap. Take IPA's for example: should be a hoppy beer, but it's become a race to make the hoppiest beer, losing all of the balance and decent malt-flavor in the process, not to mention any of the more subtle flavors that can come from hops like the citrus notes in a Cascade (I'm still trying to perfect a quality American Wheat Ale with Cascade hops that has the right balance and citrus flavor, without adding actual citrus).

Or, the "how high can we push the alcohol content" side of things: I don't need my IPA to have 10% ABV; I just want the beer to taste good. And not linger too long, like, say that horrible beechwood St. Louis macrobrew that shall not be named.

QUOTE (tigerjames @ Nov 13 2017, 02:32 PM) *
Just had an American IPA

"Founders All day IPA"......Lovely beer 9/10 IMO

A lovely Michigan brewery. I have a friend who swears by their Breakfast Stout. However, All Day IPA isn't even my favorite IPA from Michigan, as I'm a fan of Bell's Brewery, and, in particular, both their Two-Hearted Ale (one of the most well-balanced IPAs I've ever tasted) and their Oberon Wheat Ale (I look forward to the summer's first "warm day with a cold Oberon" every year). Made the trek to the Brewery over the summer, on the way to family vacation. Decent poutine to go with a round of tasters. Lovely patio setting on a MI summer day. Recommended.

QUOTE (pogophiles @ Nov 13 2017, 02:39 PM) *
That's a nice one. The tricky part with IPAs is making sure you get them fresh, since the hops tends to degrade pretty quickly. I find I'm very fond of the Northeast IPA style. Fortunately, Bearded Iris here in Nashville makes some really nice juicy examples of that style!

If a beer can't last a few weeks, there's something wrong in the construction of said beer. I'm also not a huge fan of New England IPAs / hazy beers, but that's because I keg my homebrew and chill-haze is to be avoided rather than cultivated. The only haze I want is in a wheat beer where I've intentionally left a little yeast in suspension.

Plus, for me at least, the extra hoppiness goes better with warmer days (you know, like you would have traveling through the tropics by boat to India) and, while I love New England and know, intellectually, it can be warm during summer, I lived there in my school years, so I associate New England with colder seasons (everyone should go see some autumnal splendor through the Berkshires, at some point). In New England, a Stout or Porter makes more sense to me than an IPA.

Speaking of cold-weather beers, anyone else looking forward to the Christmas-themed and spice seasonal varieties? My local / favorite is Christian Moerlein Christkindl. I literally skip down the aisle of my local grocery store when I buy the season's first six-pack. Just an easy-drinking winter warmer, perfect for in front of the fireplace. Anyone have any suggestions for other winter brews?
