Awesome performance, and I am sure you will just climb higher. At a week into the race we were neck and neck, but now my rank is in the 6000's. I was never looking at Rodriguez or Aru seriously as you had. But I did look seriously at Landa and Dumoulin, wish I would have kept them.

Looking forward to the rest day tomorrow. biggrin.gif

I can't help myself, but...Chaves is the difference between me and the top 20 or 30. rolleyes.gif Losing Froome so early also cost me a lot.

I'm enjoying the ride. I don't tend to have much fantasy success. biggrin.gif

Dumoulin with the stage win, but I don't think it's enough to shake off Aru for the win in Madrid. Still some climbing to be done, and Dumoulin will surely get attacked.

He's been countering those attacks remarkably well so far, but I too predict that he won't cope when they go all out to win it. Hell of a ride to be in it with a chance though thumbsup.gif thumbsup.gif thumbsup.gif

Amazing performance. I only picked him cos I thought he'd do well in the ITT. biggrin.gif

Comparisons with Indurain have been mentioned. That's quite the compliment.

Chaves still annoys me.

Fantasy Cycling starts early in 2016! I entered a team for Fantasy Tour Down Under. A mix of familiar faces and some new ones. Not sure how I will be able to catch any TV coverage, will need to rely on news reports.

Simon Gerrans - Orica Greenedge

Tiago Machado - Team Katusha

Nathan Haas - Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka

JJ Rojas - Movistar Team

Ryder Hesjedal - Trek-Segafredo

Wouter Wippert - Cannondale Pro Cycling Team

Oscar Gatto - Tinkoff

Michael Albasini - Orica Greenedge

Peter Kennaugh - Team Sky

I don't know Ewan, and I already had 2 Orica Greenedge cyclists - Gerrans and Albasini.

In my mind the critical decision was Gerrans vs Porte. Can't afford both without going into the cheap end of the cyclist for most of the rest of the roster. Hopefully I made the right choice, otherwise it will be a long week. biggrin.gif

I was home early today and a site had live coverage of the race in Argentina (I forget the name) with Quintana, Nibali and others.

It would probably have been interesting viewing if the coverage wasn't, quite simply, the worst coverage of a bike race I've ever seen. One camera on a helicopter, one at the finish...and a lot of random commercials and route maps. Just weird. laugh.gif

Nothing beats Phil Liggett's race coverage. Hope he never retires.

Porte wins stage 5 and trails Gerrans by only 9 seconds going into the final stage tonight. Barring another Gerrans crash, I think he has it locked up.

I did pretty terrible, as though I just slapped a team together at the last minute. biggrin.gif

Yes, my team would have done much better with Ewan who obviously wasn't on my radar. Though I should have taken Diego Ulissi, who was on my radar. A lot of Aussies did well, as was to be expected, I just didn't some of the right ones.

We share Van Garderen, Cavendish, Sagan, Poels.
My others are Gaviria, Cancellara, Tony Martin, Falls, Kiriyenka.

I barely looked at the profile of the stages, saw the word TT, so went with a couple of ITT specialists.

I doubt I'll even be able to watch it, so not sure what the point was in me bothering. biggrin.gif

Still trying to mess around with the team a little, but the site won't let me atm. If get on, this won't be the final team I guess. Looking at Valls, Chaves and Pozzovivo actually. Hope there's a way to get at least one of 'em in.

It's good prep for the tour for me. I'm not going to watch, but I'll try and read up on some of the stages which should prepare me a little better for this year's tour biggrin.gif

I put Renshaw into my team in case Cavendish succeeded, and hope to get a few points if he finished up high in some stages as his lead out man. Another bust but not so costly. Something must be wrong with Cav.

Seriously. How did you find him?

You mean you weren't following the Argentinian bike scene in January? rolleyes.gif ohmy.gif

biggrin.gif He won a couple of sprints against Cav and I made a mental note to remember him.

Having seen Caleb Ewan do well recently I should also have got him, but, as I said, my heart said Cav.

Apparently Cav was in the leadout train today especially for EBH, and pulled off with 1km to go. angry.gif

Too bad, but the risk of these late Winter races. sad.gif

There was finally the big shake-up at Paris Nice today with Matthews finishing 20 minutes behind the stage winners. I should do well in this stage with Geraint Thomas finishing 2nd and Alberto Contador 3rd, while they are now 1 and 2 in the GC table. biggrin.gif

Van Avermaet today. Great rider, but I never considered him @10 credits. The missing mountain stage changes everything for the GC. I like it because of the unpredictability, but it's more luck than wisdom this way.

That missing mountain stage has really opened this up for a lot of riders.

Stupid BMC needs to put Tejay in a sealed bubble for rest days in France.

Put his equipment in that bubble, too!

Are we ready to open up the discussion of just how good he really is? Once or twice is "unlucky" but the consistency with which little details trip him up is disturbing. Lack of focus or preparation? Really (really, really, really) unlucky? Using "really unlucky" as an excuse so people won't notice you simply aren't at the tippest of the top level? Lacking in what we Uh-mericans might call "clutch" performance?

He's graduated from "young rider" to "main GC contender on top team" but we haven't seen "GC contender" in a final week yet, have we? Just wondering how long until he goes from "contender, with some bad luck" to "unrealized potential contender who never really seems to put it together"?

I think you've opened and closed the argument for now. He's never been a serious contender, not even in the 'lesser' races like these. Like his last name, I think he's quite Dutch that way, actually. Tons of talent, but lacking that last 5% that separates the talents from the winners. reminds one of Mollema and Gesink.

Well, he did win the Tour of California 3 years ago, and I think he is too young to have peaked yet, so I will keep believing in his development for now. Still worth looking at this Spring leading into the Tour. thumbsup.gif

I tried it a couple of years ago. Very challenging to manage with juggling the different start lists wisely for each race.

Boasson Hagen is no longer on the E3 start list. Not sure why specifically, but I read that Dimension Data will only race 7 tomorrow due to "a number of injuries and illness".

Edit - Boasson Hagen out, Boonen in for me.

Disappointing that van Avermaet needed to withdraw from the E3 Harelbeke due to illness. I see mixed speculation about his participation tomorrow in the Gent-Wevelgam. Might need to make another switch. He is still listed on the start list for now.

I saw a replay of the E3 Harelbeke finish. Sagan was very disappointed, but it was a great finish by Kwiatkowski outwitting him in the end. thumbsup.gif

It's getting quite predictable though. Sagan is the best racer, but the worst winner. It's getting silly. No to take anything away from Kwiatkowski though. He's a giant as well.

I'll take my chances with Greg. Disappointed that I wasn't able to rid me of EBH in time. I'll keep him now, although he's probably not in super shape. GW is one for the sprinters, so if he's regained some strength he could be an ok choice for this one. Not expecting any miracles though. Hopefully Van Baarle does me a favor.

Rats. Enger disappeared from the starting list since yesterday and Broadview has 100% starters. Quite different teams aside from some of the obvious choices. Debusschere could do well again for you today. I have my hopes set on Gaviria, Coquard and maybe a sneaky Van Baarle top 5 finish. Some very steep climbs today. 23% at some parts ohmy.gif

Only Sagan in the lead breakaway group of 4 for us, and I think they will hold. We'll see who comes in to follow.

Sagan finally finishes right, and it wasn't a certainty. I thought the Katusha guy had him beaten. Only 82 cyclists officially finished. Probably that late 23% grade hill destroyed a bunch.

Besides Sagan and van Avermaet, I only got a smattering of assist points. You did better with Gaviria. We have one week to finalize the Tour of Flanders picks, which will be the bigger Category 1 race anyway.

As language and writing are actually different, something anyone who read the lyrics to Purple Rain (I Would Die 4 U) or Sly & The Family Stone (Thank You For Letting Me Be Mice Elf) should recognize, it doesn't surprise me that dyslexia and multi-lingual environments are correlated. It would be difficult to learn all of the "exceptions" and weird ticks of writing with a single alphabet for two different languages, and really easy to have the letters just swim around in front of you.

Taste of Belgium is my guess. Waffles and Chicken. A good choice. Did you get a chance to hit any of the Bourbon bars? The other great thing about this town: close enough to find rare and small batch Bourbons at good prices, but not an actual part of over-hyping anything, so they aren't really omnipresent in the "forced to listen to some hipster drone on about them" kind of way.

Back on topic: we are barely more than 5 weeks away from the start of the Giro and I have sooooo many questions
  1. Will BRFC attend any, all or none of the three day Netherlands-based kick off races?
  2. Who will concentrate on training for the Giro instead of the Tour this year (Valverde was supposed to ride the Giro, with Quintana the tour, but the source is from November 2015, and I don't know if those plans have changed)?
  3. What teams are riding well, collectively? Enough to give team leaders an advantage in the Grand Tours?
  4. Can all the major players get and stay healthy for an epic Tour showdown? Including supporting riders?
  5. Who are the younger riders ready to "break out" in the Grand Tours?
  6. Is there a favorite in the Grand Tours, based upon the routes, i.e. does the Giro route, with its 3 individual time trial stages (including a pretty steep climb on the last ITT) favor a particular racer or style?

I'll stop there, and maybe save a few questions for pre-Tour investigation; we'll have to revisit the health / form questions at that time, anyway, right?

Posted by: BRFC Apr 3 2016, 11:39 AM

Awesome this. You went for Boonen, Keukeleire, Langeveld, I picked Stybar, Benoot and Sagan. Neither of us have Kristof and we share Vanmarcke and Van Avermaet. Great teams, but with some interesting differences. Should be good. Game on!

The power of my curse seems particularly strong this year. Benoot to hospital, EBH bike breaks down, Vanmarcke bike breaks down. Kuznetsov bike breaks down.

About half my team won't be in the Scheldeprijs on Wednesday. I have plenty of subs available, but I don't think I will use too many as this is a category 2 race.

I'll stop there, and maybe save a few questions for pre-Tour investigation; we'll have to revisit the health / form questions at that time, anyway, right?

I might visit the start of the Amstel Gold, but I am a little busy atm. sad.gif
Quintana is going to ride the tour and will be focusing on that. Can't imagine any other scenario to be honest.
The younger riders? I'm rooting for Bob Jungels.

Questions of my own: is Contador a has-been?
Who's going to finish second in the fight for the Green Jersey in the tour? biggrin.gif

Posted by: PTC Apr 4 2016, 07:07 PM

Nibali for the Giro. Other contenders: Aru (if he's in this one), Porte and Landa.

Froome, Quintana and Contador all set for the TDF. I expect the first two to dominate.

Contador is done as a contender...if he stays clear of the pharmaceuticals.

Young rider? No idea what races he'll be in but I'll go with baby brother Dayer Quintana.

Possibility of some rain this weekend for the PR. thumbsup.gif

Should hopefully make it nice and messy.

Just watched delayed coverage of Paris-Roubaix on NBC sports channel. I purposefully stayed away from here and other sites so I wouldn't know who won.

Big surprise at the strong group breaking away from Sagan and Cancellara. Incredible finish from Hayman (who?) to win at the end from some more vaunted cyclists. thumbsup.gif

We both did well overall, I am now 201 in the rankings, BRFC crashes the top 1000 at #948. cool.gif

The next race, Brabantse Pijl, won't really help at all. Most of my team is avoiding it and will be back next week for the Amstel Gold. I'm resisting using any transfers as best I can. biggrin.gif

you just had to do a little better though didn't you?

Nice going bv. Trying hard, but you're giving me a run for my money. Boonen and Standard were both outstanding picks. thumbsup.gif Sinkeldam was in the mix a bit today. I like that. He should be able to finish top 10 in the classics at some time. Let's hope it'll be this year.

Team overhaul for the Amstel Gold - only 3 transfers for the last two races afterwards. unsure.gif

Posted by: broadview Apr 17 2016, 12:39 PM

Interesting lineups for the Amstel Gold Race today. Sep Vanmarcke is the only common racer between BRFC and myself. Here are the rest of the lineups.

BRFC - Boassan Hagen, Luke Durbridge, Michael Matthews, Philippe Gilbert, Tiesj Benoot, Michal Kwiatkowski, Juergen Roelandts, Petr Vakoc + 3 benched

Broadview - Lars Boom, Julian Alaphilippe, Tom Dumoulin, Tim Wellens, Rui Costa, Sergio Henao, Jelle Vanendert, Daniel Moreno, Diego Ulissi + 2 benched

For the remaining 2 races, BRFC has 5 transfers and I have 3.

Posted by: broadview Apr 17 2016, 01:46 PM

bad news for BRFC - Benoot leaves early due to illness.

Yeah, decided to sit this one out transferwise in case I had to make some switches for LBL. Should be a good race today. Benoot has been a disappointment all spring long tbh.

Thanks, ended up 272 overall. It's a tough game with timing of the subs as the important key.

Now there is a Tour de Romandie comp with line-ups due Tuesday night. Froome is the fave in this one. Not sure if I'll enter though.

For the first time ever, I sort of followed these Classics. You really do need to do a lot of research beforehand to figure out which races suit which riders, pick a starting team...then plan out strategic transfers along the way.

Not easy. 272 is pretty darn good. thumbsup.gif

272 is amazing. Well done on Costa and Sanchez too. I underestimated the toughness of this edition. This was one for good climbers and strong men like that. thumbsup.gif

Finished 1800+ overall. Out of 4000+. Hardly spectacular, but I enjoyed following the classics much more closely than I normally do.

Nice and different teams guys! Charlie seems to have chosen quite some tt specialists. We all have different men for the gc. I need Valverde to do well. Uran, Landa and Nibali are the other main men in the list. Quite different Sprinters too. Kittel, Nizzolo, Modolo and Viviani. Didn't go Kittel because I think he'll quit the race before the end and I'd like someone with a shot at the red Jersey.

I wouldn't have bothered with Cancellera but, if I recall correctly, there wasn't anyone else I liked in that category group.

I'm hoping Kittel gets a couple of stage wins before he runs home. biggrin.gif It was between him and Ewan for my main sprinter. Nizzolo is a very decent pick and a heavy favourite to get the points jersey at the end.

I would have liked Valverde, but, well...not enough cash.

A couple of others I seriously considered are the Russians - Zakarin and Firsanov.

Firsanov is a huge gamble on my part. He hasn't really raced against the big guns. It's cute he wins some obscure Italian course, but Landa, Nibali and Valverde are different beasts altogether. He could be a surprise, but he could also finish every mountain stage @3 minutes.

Reports coming through that Jakob Mareczko has abandoned. Mareczko would have been a contender for victory in today's finish if it comes down to a bunch sprint.

QUOTE
Dimension Data have confirmed that Omar Fraile has abandoned the race due to the injuries he sustained in a crash yesterday. That will be a big blow to the team who would have hoped that Fraile could take the mountains classification jersey as he did at last year's Vuelta a Espana. He did, however, wear it for one day after getting in the break on stage 2.

Mareczko was a risk, but Fraile would have done well in the mountains.

Bad luck, but I don't like these sprinters who have no real intention of riding out the entire Giro. He has done very well for you in the first week. I see BRFC lost Viviani as well.

Cancellara has already been surpassed early in this TT today - he was done before the TV coverage began. Might be a wasted pick on my part. I hope he sticks it out until the last TT at stage 15.

This isn't really a sprinter-friendly route, so I figured on getting someone in to get me stage wins.

He did ok, and could easily have had 3.

I'm most annoyed by Fraile disappearing. He would definitely have done well in the mountains.

I was just reading that he said he "didn't have the legs" today. I am sure the weather contributed. But he says he is now focused mainly on the TT next week, not the GC. Hopefully he will feel differently after the rest break, but there is a big mountain stage Tuesday that he is concerned about after today's performance.

This is why I refuse to take seriously anything fantasy-related. Too much randomness and luck involved to do well, especially over the course of a 3-week event like this.

I enjoyed that finish, and that was a great pick of yours with Powless - I thought he would keep the lead to the top.

Actually I believe I have the slight edge here - we both have Dennis, and I have Zubielda and Craddock who both finished in the top 15. dirol.gif

When Powless went I was happy, but I knew he wouldn't last.

Lots of climbing still to do in this race, and that Cavendish pick is an expensive bust. I expected him to compete in both sprints, and all he gave me was...

You really should get me soon, and your squad is strong so you could do well overall.

Any idea how many people joined the game? The site doesn't say, which is weird, considering they show it for all their other games.

You are 138 and I am 64 after stage 5. Not shabby for a team I put together on the last day.

No idea how many entries but the worst stage performance was me on stage 2 at 1865 when I still had several riders scoring, so it must be significantly higher.

Not sure how today's stage will mix it up. Maybe I should quit here. smile.gif

They're all mad, but not as nuts as Sagan.

The other day in Cali (I think it was the Gibraltar Road stage) there was an old Chinaman dressed as a chicken, 'flying' up the road alongside the cyclists. He is the reason my wife is now watching the rest of the race with me. biggrin.gif

Typical Scoobs post: completely offtopic.gif and long. Enjoy biggrin.gif

A few things here:
  1. It's not actually that hard to climb the "fence" at one part of the exhibit. I've looked over some reports and the basics are that the kid climbed a "wall" that isn't much over my waist, if that. A determined kid could probably get there in a minute, if that, or about the time it takes for a parent to be distracted with a picture. (full disclosure: I hate pictures, especially as the gift shop has postcards with better pictures than your phone is going to take and your picture gets in the way of my enjoyment of the exhibit, but that's probably a different rant. The point was: people take pictures and the kid could easily have made a break for it in that amount of time.) Oh, and he fell into the moat that separates people from exhibit, which is a good 15 feet high.
  2. People hating on the parents online = not helping. Sure, we all agree they should be responsible, but complaining online doesn't actually help anybody. Not Harambe, who will remain dead. Not the parents, who don't need your input to realize what a huge mistake has been made. And not the Zoo, who made a difficult decision and lost a lot of money (fine: earning potential, as Harambe could potentially have benefited the Zoo through stud fees or by fathering children to be sold to other zoos throughout the world).
  3. You want to help? Go https://cincinnatizoo.thankyou4caring.org/sslpage.aspx?pid=298. Especially because we've had problems renewing / passing taxes to support the Zoo which, while a popular attraction in the area, is swimming against the tide of, to paraphrase the pithy bumper stickers, "patriots who have been taxed enough." Frankly: it's that kind of country 'round these parts and every little bit helps.
  4. For the record: the Cincinnati Zoo is http://www.americasbestonline.net/index.php/pages/bestzoos.html. We may lack the media presence of our northern "neighbors" in Columbus, who have Jack Hanna, but those people "in the know" recognize that we rank right up there with San Diego and the National Zoo, particularly for our efforts in breeding of endangered animals. One of my favorite random lectures I have ever attended included a monologue from one of our finest zookeeper's discussing collecting Rhinoceros sperm in the wild using "old-fashioned" techniques, i.e. a Rhino hand-job, on a tranquilized animal. Somehow, I've heard that speech more than once. And yes, it's hilarious every time.
  5. Really not helping? http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/gorilla-killing-at-cincinnati-zoo-sparks-probe-into-possible-criminal-charges/ar-BBtH9Uc?li=BBnb7Kz&ocid=U219DHP who want to criminally charge the zoo itself. Or claim there wasn't a reason to shoot Harambe. I don't want a dead gorilla, either (frankly: he's more rare and valuable than your child, but that's easy for those of us without children to say), but Harambe was definitely endangering that child (seriously: have you heard the description from Thane Maynard about having watched Harambe crush a coconut with one hand? And he was dragging the kid around, not "holding him by the hand" as I saw some idiot put it). In a "who gets to live" decision between animal and human (and don't fool yourself: one of them was going to die), I'm fairly certain we should choose "human" every time. Doesn't make Harambe's death any less tragic. Just means the Zoo itself made the correct call once the situation reached a certain point.
  6. Can't emphasize enough: most of the Zoos and Zookeepers I know (and I have a good friend who works at the Cincinnati Zoo) are doing more to help animals, especially those who are endangered by our collective indifference, than all the bleating of these so-called "Activists" living in their nice air-conditioned homes. Such "Activists" probably want more done about the potential damage from the Zika virus through mosquito control programs, but the mosquitos that carry the danger aren't cute and furry. Bloody species-ists.
  7. Returning to the exhibit: it was, when built, pretty revolutionary, as it was among the first "natural setting" enclosures, in contrast to the "bad old days" of animals in small cages behind bars. And it's worked a treat for 30+ years or so.
  8. In conclusion: Don't just take your child to your Zoo. Interact with him or her. Educate him or her. Spend time reading the informative materials to your children. Help them understand that wild animals are, well, wild. Help them understand our responsibility to be good stewards of these animals and the entire planet. Impress upon them a curiosity to explore how we can be better custodians of our world. Who knows? You might even learn a thing or two yourself.

I'm bored of the footie.

I'm bored of refinishing hardwood floors and stairs.

I'll never get bored of this. smile.gif

The rider prices seem cheaper than usual...or is it just me?

I thought in previous years the top guns were in the 80s at least.

I looked at the first page in this thread from 2010.

Some prices, for reference...

Mark Cavendish Starter Bench THR $105
Lance Armstrong Bench Starter RSH $85
Alberto Contador Bench Starter AST $100

Well, if you want to be really French, we could try crępes.

The pricing has definitely changed and it will change some of the dynamics.
It will allow for more all-stars, fewer of the unknowns. Could be better or worse depending on perspective.

Really looking forward to the race regardless of how the game works.
Are you entering your usual array of teams? biggrin.gif

I prefer having to dig around at the bottom of the talent bucket. More fun, and satisfaction when I get lucky.

Of course. cool.gif

My TT team will join when they have the first ITT stage.

You'd expect those names to be in a different order before today's race. Great win for Cav.

I didn't think Cav still had it in him to win stages against the likes of Kittel. ohmy.gif

Buried somewhere in the fine print:

Just playing around going for stage wins in the practice phase. Won't mean anything in the race phase.

I was wondering how you got Kwiatkowski in Velogames. That's too bad. sad.gif

I think those roundabouts and other traffic islands on the flat stages make it as hazardous as the mountains sometimes. biggrin.gif

Another great sprint finish, Cavendish with two now! Full of drama as usual. smile.gif

Yeah, my bad for entering June 20th. Just stupid.

I'm always in awe of how they manage to navigate these traffic islands with 60km/h during the last stages of the race. Scary stuff. Did you know the call the small signs 'holidays' in the peloton?

Final NBC team in.

Wide open field, all 198 riders still alive. No one did us any favors by getting injured although Contador tried hard.

We will see who lasts just one more stage. laugh.gif

Even with the cheaper prices I still have too much dead wood in my team.

I'm struggling to sort out my sprinters in my main team.

In a couple of days I'll do my usual spreadsheet showing everyone's teams, for comparison.

Was very tough. My final choice in the end was picking Quintana and a cheapie over two more medium-priced GC chancers (Kelderman and Rodriguez). thinking.gif

Posted by: PTC Jul 6 2016, 07:57 PM

The only riders we all picked are Froome and Sagan.

Good to see some different strategies at play. BRFC with more top sprinters, broadview goes without Quintana.

Not thrilled with the lack of depth on my team. A couple of early withdrawals and I could be screwed.

Good luck everyone...except sallan. smile.gif

I still prefer it over Champions league's plastic perfection. Love cycling, precisely because of the chaos and impossibility to orchestrate everything.

It's just another reminder why I can never take fantasy sports seriously, and why I don't bet on sports.

All this talk of extra police for the Tour's safety, but no one thought to consider the rogue balloon deflator taking out the riders. laugh.gif
