Watched Black Mass the 'based on a true story' account of the rise of James J. "Whitey Bulger", last night. Simply awesome. Johnny Depp does career-best work as the notorious Boston gangster.

Also watched The Martian the other day. Damon does good work, though not in the same class as the Depp film.

Watched Tangerine yesterday in whi8ch after hearing that her boyfriend/pimp cheated on her while she was in jail, a transgender working girl tears through Tinseltown on Christmas Eve searching for him. Atrocious, obnoxious, amateurish rubbish, ineptly performed, scripted and directed. Shot on cellphones which just goes to prove that anyone can make a movie, which in turns proves that just because anyone can make a movie, not everyone should.

Blimey, no one's posted here in 3 months shok.gif

Anyway, went to see Triple 9 last night, atylish atmospheric ensemble crime drama in which a gang of criminals and corrupt cops plan the murder of a police officer in Atlanta in order to pull off their biggest heist yet across town. Quality casting including Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet and gritty direction makes for a good watch.

Not seen too many films recently but The Revenant was brilliant. Difficult to watch at times but intense. Leo finallly getting the oscar he has long deserved.

Deadpool was a really fun movie. The one liners were so good and this film had me laughing throughout.

Haven't seen The Revenant, but I'm ready to start the Deadpool backlash.

The one-liners were good, but not great. Frankly, the opening credits were fantastic, but I think the rest of the humor missed as often as it hit. Once you get through the entire opening shot and start the movie proper, it's all downhill.

The plot was paint-by-numbers hero origin. Some of the one liners would have been funnier, if the actual movie itself wasn't following the exact same formula: hero finds love, only to have it taken away, undergoes personal tragedy which results in superpowers, but can't live a "normal" life.

I didn't buy the chemistry between the lovers. I really didn't buy the whole "I'm too ugly and she'll never love me again" schtick. I didn't buy that he's stupid enough to want revenge but also fall for the "I'm the only one who can fix it" line.

Basically: he's a low-rent Wolverine clone (literally) with half the badassery and arguably better one-liners (certainly more one-liners).

I will say, though, that like Will Ferrell as Buddy the Elf, Deadpool is the character Ryan Reynolds was born to play. Too bad he couldn't lift the rest of the movie up to that standard.

I watched The Other Side of the Door earlier. A really weird ghost story set in India. Liked it though.

I have to stop the train there, fellas, but ...

Why? As in, why don't you have to see a trailer to know this is a bad idea? Looks to me like they have a solid cast who have all been funny in other roles (with the inspired casting of Chris Hemsworth in the Annie Potts role as the administrative assistant), a director in Paul Feig with a good track record (especially as he cut his chops on Arrested Development and The Office (U.S. Version)) and enough time for the special effects to be better, without becoming too central to the movie.

Sure, franchise "reboots" have been a mixed bag, where the good side has Star Trek and the Christian Bale Batmans, but the down side has Indiana Jones (or does Crystal Skull count as a sequel and not a "reboot") and whatever they did with Spiderman after Tobey Maguire, but the very "mixed" portion of it means it could just as easily be good (or, at least, worthy of a matinee) as terrible.

Besides, it can't really be any worse than Phantom Menace, can it?

What he said. Must admit I was in the fanboy "not watching this with all woman cast" camp for quite a while then got given a free ticket to see it, so I did. The good stops there though.

Given that McCarthy and Wiig can be really quite funny, th cast gender changes shouldn've been an issue, but the four leads seem more like female variations on the original models than fully formed characters in their own right. They score precious few laughs and are saddled with foolish 'zaniness', lumpen lines and deliver entirely charisma free performances. Even worse, whilst the original movies had Annie Potts' deliciously unflappable Janine Melnitz, this time around, the 'busters hire a hunky dolt played by Chris Hemsworth in a wooden performance that sucks the comic energy out of his every scene. Most of the original cast do turn up in cameos, but it doesn't help. The best of them are CGI, Slimer and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, who appears alongside some kind of steampunk ghoul version of the Thanksgiving Day Parade. Those and other nostalgic nods only serve as a reminder of the wit, ingenuity and charm that's lacking here, having been sacrificed to bland, effects-laden bloat and uninspired writing. On the bright side, some of the ghost effects are excellent - and quite scary in comparison to the original, but in truth there's little to enjoy about this missed opportunity.

Continuing my exclusivity of watching bad movies on planes, "F8 the fate of the furious" didn't disappoint.

Because cars full of gasoline are a great cover for MOAB explosions.

Great bubblegum for the brain, I didn't have to think once.

🤔🙄😉

I enjoyed it with low expectations based on the previous two films. The Rock changing the trajectory of a missile, with his bare hands was a highlight.
